About Stüssy
In the late 80s and early 90s, a brand born out of the Southern California surf scene vividly repainted the world of apparel with a new casual wear look and ideology. That brand was Stüssy. A spontaneous brand born out of youth culture, it unintentionally revolutionized the apparel industry.

Shawn Stüssy was a surfer who shaped surfboards for his local friends in Laguna Beach, California. Shawn created screen-printed t-shirts and shorts to promote his surfboards. His company logo was a graffiti-influenced, hand-drawn version of his last name. Stüssy was an inadvertent entry into the apparel industry, driven by his deep love of surfing. In the late 80s, he made waves in the small, isolated world of surfing and skateboarding. Shawn opened small showrooms in New York and California, and showed his designs to shops he respected.

Stüssy grew during a time of groundbreaking changes that shaped modern pop culture. The music scene was introduced to punk in the late 70s and rap in the early 80s, a DIY style of music. Punk revolutionized young people's imagination and their thinking about aesthetics, and taught them that anyone could form a band. Rap removed social boundaries such as race and class, and explored the idea of remixing and sampling. These new ideas built a new, contemporary platform for fashion and cultural expression. Stüssy's designs and aesthetics were referenced by a number of underground subcultures that resonated with the brand. This approach appealed to creative young people around the world who shared a common interest in surf, skate, and music culture. Limited distribution also stimulated desire around the world, and those who wanted it somehow acquired it, and in the process realized that they were part of a larger movement.

The success of the brand has allowed Stüssy to travel the world spreading its vibes, and Stüssy apparel has been inspired by a global community of musicians, skaters, DJs, and artists who share the same aesthetic. This network of like-minded people has created a movement that trendsetters in New York, London, Tokyo, and elsewhere are eager to join.

This group of like-minded people would later become known as the "International Stüssy Tribe" and established bases in New York, Tokyo, London, Berlin and Los Angeles. The tightly knit tribe members would wear Stüssy at clubs and in their own scenes around the world, and the message of Stüssy would spread naturally. Stüssy aimed to provide modern, high-quality apparel at an affordable price, and sold in limited quantities only at select stores around the world. This completely new approach, which was unprecedented at the time, has since been a success on many levels.
