What is Hasami ware?

Hasami ware is a traditional craft with approximately 400 years of history in Hasami Town, located in the central part of Nagasaki Prefecture.

The porcelain made here is loved not only in Japan but all over the world. It is characterized by white porcelain, which is made by applying a colorless glaze to a white base and firing it at high temperatures, and by blue and white painting, which is painted with indigo paint on a white base. Its beauty has fascinated many people throughout the ages.

1. Product planning and design

Based on the concept, we consider the direction of items, shapes, sizes, colors, patterns, etc. We materialize the image with rough sketches and finally put it into a drawing. In recent years, the use of 3D software has also increased.

2. Prototype

Based on the blueprint, a prototype is made by carving out plaster. The base shrinks by about 11-13% during the drying and firing process, and may become distorted in some places, so we make adjustments based on experience to anticipate irregularities.

3. Sample and plaster mold

A throwaway mold (for trial use) is made from the original model, and a sample is made. Once the mold is fine-tuned and the shape is finalized, the throwaway mold is used to create a case mold (for duplicating the working mold) and a working mold (for production).

4. Pottery clay <Main ingredient>

Finely crushed ceramic stone is put into a mixing tank and the particles are adjusted to a uniform size. After removing the iron with a magnet, the mixture is pressed to remove moisture, and finally, it is mixed and deaerated in a kneading machine before being shaped into rods with an auger.

5. Molding

The main techniques include "casting", "mechanical potter's wheel" and "roller machine" which use molds, as well as "hand potter's wheel" and "hand building" which are done by hand without using molds. Molds are generally used for mass production.

6. Unglazed pottery

After shaping, the base is carved to set the shape and thoroughly dried in a well-ventilated place. Then, it is placed in a kiln and fired at about 900℃ to stabilize the shape and make it easier to paint, glaze, and so on.

7. Underglaze painting

"Underglaze" is painted before glazing, and "overglaze" is painted after glazing. The main painting techniques include traditional hand-painting with a brush, as well as printing using stamps, transfer paper, pads, etc.

8. Glazing

The base material is immersed in the glaze and fired (at about 1300℃), causing the glaze to melt and leaving a smooth, glassy film on the surface. This not only serves as decoration, but also to eliminate water absorption and harden the material.

9. Final firing

The most common types of kiln for mass production are the "shuttle kiln," a box-shaped kiln that fires the base material in a fixed position, the "tunnel kiln," a tunnel-shaped kiln that fires while moving, and the "roller hearth kiln." Firing times vary depending on the type of kiln.

10. Kiln removal and overglaze painting

Rapid cooling can cause cracks, so the piece is left in the kiln to cool naturally until it reaches a certain temperature. For overglaze painting, after the main firing, the piece is painted with a pigment that melts at a low temperature (overglaze paint) and then fired again at about 800℃.
