In the Tale of Genji, Hikaru Genji is depicted dancing the gagaku dance "Seigaiha," and the name "Seigaiha" comes from his costume. The design of infinitely spreading waves is known as an auspicious pattern that represents wishes for eternal happiness and peaceful lives for people.

The pattern, which represents a thunderstorm that drench all things and fields, is considered a symbol of a bountiful harvest in Japan.
